Travel

How do I get from Faro airport to Lagos?

The transfer is included, both ways. A driver meets you at arrivals in Faro, and about an hour later, after a drive along the coast, you’re at the villa in Lagos.

How do I fly to Faro from the East Coast?

United flies nonstop from Newark to Faro in summer, roughly mid-May to late September; check the 2027 schedule. In April, early May and October, connect through Lisbon or another European hub. Your transfer from Faro is included either way.

Flying in from the Americas?

Lisbon has direct flights from New York, Boston, Toronto, São Paulo and Rio. From Lisbon it’s a short connecting flight to Faro, about 50 minutes, and we take it from there: your transfer from Faro is included, both ways.

What is SAND?

SAND is an iPhone app in development. While you’re away, it will look after your calls and enquiries, and family can still reach you. See the preview at velocitywake.com/sand.

What is the best time to visit Lagos?

The Velocity season runs April to October. April, May and October are quieter and milder; June and September bring warm evenings without the peak crowds; July and August are the hottest and busiest months. The sea is at its warmest in midsummer, around July, when southerly winds carry the warm water back to the coast.

How warm is the sea in Lagos?

Fresher than many expect. For much of the season a north wind pushes the warm surface water back out to the Atlantic, so the Lagos coast can run cool. When the wind turns to the south, which happens more often in midsummer, around July, the warm water drifts back in and the sea grows soft and inviting. Even on the cooler days, a swim after a hot afternoon feels wonderful.

What do US citizens need to travel to Portugal?

Portugal is part of the Schengen area. Entry rules, passport validity and travel authorization requirements change, so check the US State Department’s page for Portugal before you book your flights.

Do I need travel insurance?

We recommend it, and it isn’t included. Choose a policy that covers your flights, your belongings and water sports.

The week

What is a Velocity week?

Seven nights in Lagos, Portugal, Saturday to Saturday: a villa with ten private bedrooms and a pool, a chef, coached mornings on the water and afternoons for the coast, the old town or nothing at all. Everything is arranged before you land.

What’s included in the price?

Seven nights in a villa with a pool, where every guest has a private bedroom; breakfast, brunch and the chef’s dinners with Portuguese wine; the Faro airport transfer, both ways; coached boat sessions with video review; all gear, wetsuits included; the boat trip to Ponta da Piedade; yoga and massage; and planning and support from before you fly.

What isn’t included?

Flights to Faro, travel insurance and personal extras.

How many guests are in a week?

A small group, never more than 12. Few enough that the boat, the table and the coach’s attention are shared by a small group; enough for a long, lively dinner.

Can I come on my own?

Yes. Shared weeks suit solo travelers well, and friendships start easily at a shared table. Every guest has a private bedroom. Coming as a couple or with a friend? You’re welcome to share.

Is it a good trip for couples if only one of us rides?

Yes. The price is one package for the whole week, so a partner who doesn’t wake surf pays the same as one who does, and every part of the week is theirs as well: the boat, the villa, the table and the coast. Everyone in the group is welcome everywhere. Someone who isn’t booked on the week can join an outing if their spot is paid or if there is space.

Do I need to ride already?

No. Sessions are set to your level, from first-timer to advanced. Wake surfing is the gentlest place to begin: you start on a rope, then let it go and ride the boat’s own wave at low speed, close to the stern.

Can we book a private week for our group?

Yes. Friends, families and teams can take the villa, the boat and the crew for the whole week. Tell us your group size when you register.

Where do the wake surf sessions take place?

On the bay off Meia Praia, the long Blue Flag beach that runs about 2.5 miles east from the Lagos marina toward the Alvor estuary. Sessions start early, when the water is usually at its calmest, and are planned around wind, tide and the conditions on the day.

What is there to do in Lagos besides the water?

Plenty. A boat trip into the grottoes of Ponta da Piedade, the coves of Praia Dona Ana and Praia do Camilo, the old town’s walls, the gilded Igreja de Santo António and the Mercado da Avenida, and the cliff trail to the lighthouse. Sagres and Cape St. Vincent are about 40 minutes west.

Are there wineries near Lagos?

Yes. Lagos is one of the Algarve’s four wine appellations. Estates near town that open for tastings include Monte da Casteleja and Monte do Além, both organic, and toward Lagoa, Morgado do Quintão and Quinta dos Vales. A vineyard afternoon fits easily into the week.

Is there yoga and massage?

Yes, both are included: yoga on the terrace before the boat and massage at the villa. For a slower day, the old spa village of Caldas de Monchique is about 40 minutes inland.

Can you cater for dietary needs?

Yes. Tell us when you register, and the chef plans the week’s menus around it.

Is it suitable for children?

The week is designed for adults. Families who would like a private week can ask us directly.

Money and booking

How much does it cost?

From €5,900 per person for the week, all-in. Prices vary by season. April (opening month): €5,900. May and October: €6,500. June and September: €7,500. July and August: €9,000. One price per person, whatever the room.

How do I book?

Register your interest. We send dates, price and terms in writing. Registering is free and doesn’t commit you to anything.

Weather and safety

What happens if the weather turns?

The day pivots: the coast, the town, the pool or a long lunch. We never sell a weather guarantee; every session is planned around wind, tide and the conditions on the day.

Is it safe?

Every session runs from a modern wake boat with our crew and a coach on board, starts with a briefing, and comes with life vests in every size. When the sea says no, we stay ashore.

The people and the table

How many bedrooms does the villa have?

Ten private bedrooms, plus a pool, a terrace and an open kitchen. Every guest has a private bedroom. Coming as a couple or with a friend? You’re welcome to share.

Who will be on the trip?

A small group of guests, never more than 12, a small core crew, a coach on the boat and a chef at the villa. It is small enough that everyone is known by name and large enough for a long, lively table.

Do I have to ride?

No. Guests who don’t ride are just as welcome on the boat, at the villa or in town. The week is one package and every part of it is yours.

Who cooks?

A chef cooks breakfast, brunch and dinner at the villa, with Algarve fish and seafood and Portuguese wine. Tell us about dietary needs when you register.
